Epoxy verse PVC Paddle boards: What’s the difference when shopping SUP’s? Why the price difference in paddle boards that are seemingly alike, but have as much as $100 difference in their price tags. Don’t jump so fast for what seems to be a great looking board at a low price. Epoxy and PVC boards come in many types of construction. The key difference is in that type of material contruction or combination there of. The PVC board will be more expensive, yet much lighter. Give each a lift for yourself. The PVC board is superior construction rather than being hand laid up, a mold is used for durability and strenght, an EPS core with epoxy fiberglass bond, then a PVC layer. That extra is worth it too. Why buy a board that is so heavy you can hardly left it to put it on your car? A little extra cost put in a PVC board may be worth it to you and pay for itself in the enjoyment of handling a more lightweight and easier to manuever paddle board. When choosing a board is there any other difference other than weight to tell the difference between PVC construction and Epoxy boards? Many boards do look very similar with paint fooling the buyer. An easy way to tell boards apart is that Epoxy boards almost always come with a pressure release valve? What’s that? When an epoxy board sits in the sun too long they build up internal pressure, and that needs to be released. A small valve can be opened to release that pressure and prevent cracks or pop outs. Some boards today come with “Gore Vents” which are “one way” pressure relief valves which were originally used in waterproof electronics. None the less almost all epoxy boards will have a vent present where as a PVC board has no need for one. So… now you know, you’ll find a lighter board of stronger more durable contruction in a PVC board, and you’ll know an Epoxy board by the the vent valve located on the deck. No matter which you choose, we’re glad to see you getting out on the water. You’ll certainly be having fun, but knowing what you are buying and getting for your money is important. Make the right choice and get the board that best meets your needs in how you plan to use it. For more information stop by Waterboyz, or visit us at Waterboyz.com.
